Bonham -- With firefighters battling several blazes over the weekend and more hot, dry weather forecast for the week ahead, Fannin County Commissioners Court voted to initiate a burn ban. The decision came during a regular meeting of commissioners court Tuesday morning.
According to Fannin County Emergency Management Coordination Darrell Brewer, the quick response of almost all area fire departments prevented 12 structures near Ravenna, Texas from being damaged after lightning strikes started a fast-moving grass and brush fire. At one point, door-to-door evacuations were conducted to ensure public safety.
"This thing was really moving across the countryside fast," remarked Fannin County Precinct 1 Commissioner Gary Whitlock.
A lightning strike ignited another grassfire in White Shed Community north of Bonham, although Mother Nature also quickly extinguished the five-foot high flames when rain began fall.
Fannin County Commissioners Court will revisit the burn ban on a weekly basis.
