TRENTON - The Jacob Cangemi Memorial Scholarship would like to announce the third annual Jacob's Run which includes a Competitive 5K Run and 3K Walk for Fun. The event will be held May 15, 2010 starting and finishing in the downtown square of Trenton, Texas.
“Last year's event was a success even though it rained up until 7:00 am race day. We're happy to report that we had returning and new sponsors, 130+ participants and raised over $5,000 to support this very worthy cause,” said Race Director and Co-Founder, Renee Cangemi. “We've already had several Sponsors sign up for the 2010 event but continue to look for more to help underwrite certain aspects of the event such as t-shirts, water stops and other refreshments, awards, publicity, etc. We have several sponsorship levels available.” said Cangemi.
Yvette Oquin, Co-Founder of the Scholarship says, “New this year - we are separating the Runners and Walkers. The Walk will now be a 3K and will be a shortened version of our original course. We are working on a new more challenging route for the runners. We are also reaching out to the world through Social Networking. If you already have a Facebook account, search for our Facebook Fan Page ‘Jacob's Run.’ If not, visit us at www.jacobsrun.org and click the Facebook link.”
Laurice Goodwin, Co-Founder of the Scholarship says, “This annual event is the primary fundraiser for the Jacob Cangemi Memorial Scholarship which in the past has provided college scholarships to Trenton area high school students. We are pleased to announce that we are extending our reach to the Texoma area. Our scholarship is offered to kids who have different learning styles – students who might need additional support to reach their educational potential. We want to not only help these young men and women see college as a reality but to help them stay in college. Because we are extending our reach for scholarships from just Trenton to the Texoma area, we have begun what we hope will be a long-term relationship with Texoma radio station, 107.3 Doc FM.”
The Jacob Cangemi Memorial Scholarship was founded in 2007 by Jacob's mother Renee Cangemi, her sister Yvette Oquin and Laurice Goodwin, Jacob's former teacher and mentor, to honor his memory. Jacob passed away on 07/07/07 due to injuries sustained from a car wreck. In the 18 years that Jacob lived he left an everlasting memory with all that he touched. He was a devoted son and brother, a loyal friend and hard worker.
Jacob was a natural born leader and encourager with a heart for people who were struggling. He consistently overcame adversity in his life and was an inspiration to those he touched. It is in this spirit that the Jacob Cangemi Memorial Scholarship was created.
