ATLANTA, Ga. – Two members of the Austin College men’s soccer team and six members of the women’s team have been named All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference performers for the 2009 season, the league office has announced.
On the men’s side, senior Alex Dawson and sophomore Luis Castillo were each named 2nd Team All-SCAC in a vote by the conference coaches. Dawson, a senior midfielder from Spring, scored four goals including two game winners and had a team-best eight assists and 16 total points during the year. Castillo, a sophomore from Kingwood and last year’s SCAC Newcomer of the Year, scored five goals and added five assists for a total of 15 points, second best on the team behind Dawson.
For the women, Ashleigh Johnson and Emma Treu were each named 2nd Team All-SCAC and Shelley Casey, Annie Gunter, Natalie Nelms and Kaitlin Elledge were each named 3rd Team All-Conference. Johnson, a junior defender from Austin, started 17 games and helped anchor a defense that surrendered just 16 goals all season. Treu, a freshman forward from San Antonio, tied for the team lead with six goals and added two assists for a total of 14 points on the year, second best on the team.
Casey, a sophomore forward from Albuquerque, New Mexico, finished the season with five goals and three assists. Gunter, a senior midfielder from Richardson, scored six goals including three game winners and added three assists for a team-best 15 points on the year.
Nelms, a freshman midfielder from Plano, started 17 games and scored a goal with two assists, and Elledge, a junior goalkeeper from Fort Worth, started every game for the ’Roos and allowed just 16 goals, four of which came on penalty kicks. Elledge had a .826 save percentage and added an assist from her goalie position.
Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
