SHERMAN, TEXAS — The Austin College Concert Band will perform a tribute to the United States in its fall performance on Wednesday, November 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Wynne Chapel. The performance is free and open to the public.
The show, “Forging a Nation,” will be directed by Bob Archer, adjunct instructor in music. Archer said the theme for the concert is “music devoted to the founding, defense, and sacrifice that is America” and will include songs and texts recognizing the nation’s presidents, military, and historic military conflicts.
Current members of the Concert Band are Austin College students (music majors and non-music majors), Austin College faculty, area high school band directors, and community members.
The music will include “Chester,” an overture for band, by William Shuman; “Fort McHenry Suite,” by Julie Giroux; “Lincoln Portrait,” by Aaron Copland; the World War medley “Over There,” arranged by M.L. Lake; “Duty, Honor, Country,” with text by Douglas MacArthur; “The Strategic Air Command Concert March,” by Clifton Williams; “Where Valor Proudly Sleeps,” by Robert Longfield; “Ceremony of Allegiance,” by Don Gillis; and the “Star-Spangled Banner,” arranged by Jack Stamp.
Guest narrators will be Gloria Davidson, Dick Malnory, and Paul Onspaugh.
