On Sunday, November 8, '09, 3-5 pm, Michele & John Law, originally from Canada, but now proclaiming themselves "homeless" (living mostly in their van while touring this continent & Australia) will be the featured singer-songwriter duo at Harmony House Concerts. Read more about The Laws below. The requested donation for their performance is $15 per person, with all proceeds going to the performing artists.
To make a reservation, call 903/583-2661 and leave the number of seats desired and your contact information (preferably e-mail). To prepay, please make a check to The Laws and mail to Faye Wedell; P.O. Box 812; Bonham, TX 75418, by November 1st. Prepayment makes things simpler for the hosts, Faye Wedell & Scott Lipsett. However, you can also pay at the door. Should you prepay and have to cancel, please do so before November 3rd to receive a refund.
Harmony House is located at Wildscape Acres, an oasis amidst a panorama of woodlands and waving tall prairie grasses, about 10 miles North of Bonham and about 65 miles NE of the metroplex. Concerts are held inside the vintage home being restored and constantly changing like the seasons. The atmosphere is cozy and casual. The Laws will perform 2 45-minute sets with an intermission betweem for snacks and bottomless cups of coffee, tea, and punches. An optional $1 cash donation helps to defray costs...a basket will be provided in the breakfast room.
For those interested in staying for a Potluck Dinner after the show, Faye will be preparing chili (both meat and meatless varieties). Others are asked to bring side dishes, breads, salads, and/or desserts. If you plan to enjoy a bowl of chili & other fixins' along with the fellowship of friends, please state your intent when making reservations. Also, if you need directions to Wildscape Acres, request that they be sent by e-mail. A Song Circle will be held after dinner, so here's your opportunity to share your talent with supportive others, to sing-along, or just to listen.
So what makes The Laws such a delectable duo? When asking Michele about their relationship, she says, "You can say it was love at first height!"
With a laugh, Canadian-born-and–bred bassist/vocalist/songwriter Michele Law, whom some in a certain part of America would describe as "a tall drink of water," characterizes the moment near the end of August, 1996, when she and her husband of seven years, John Law, crossed paths at a mutual friend’s party. "I took him home, and that was that," she says in summary of that memorable night long ago.
Cut to 2007, and John and Michele are not only husband and wife but are also partners in music, performing as The Laws and getting ready to make a strong move for greater recognition in the Americana ranks in this country behind a typically ambitious touring schedule (200-plus nights a year on the road) and a stirring new album for their own label, JML Music, titled Ride It Out. The duo’s fifth long player, Ride It Out is noticeably lacking any false notes in its compelling original songs, empathetic musicianship and emotionally charged vocal performances.
John and Michele, who have become accustomed to living in their van (in fact, their personal possessions are in storage in Canada; they are, in essence, homeless), have made a commitment of sorts by putting down roots in Nashville, where they have rented an apartment and have signed a publishing deal with SWITR, Inc.
Not least of the Laws’ selling points is their acumen in the kitchen. They published a cookbook and have appeared on numerous cooking shows through the years, generating almost as much press for their culinary skills as for their music. They also offer shows that are part cooking workshop, part musical performance. This sprang from their determination to eat healthy while touring constantly.
Cooking or music? Music or
cooking? At one point that might have been a tossup. Now, however, with the assured, resonant performances on exhibit on Ride It Out, it appears the Laws are really ready to start cooking. But not in the kitchen. To learn more about The Laws and to listen to song clips, visit www.thelaws.ca.
