Flyers were sent home at Anna and Van Alstyne elementary schools last week announcing fall programs at the Van Alstyne Library.  This is the first year the library has offered after school programs.

On Mondays at 4:00 p.m., beginning on September 21, the Bluebonnet Book Discussion Club will meet, for children 3rd – 6th grade.  The first book to be discussed will be “Piper Reed, Navy Brat.”  This book is on the list of Bluebonnet Books chosen each year by Texas librarians as recommended reading.  Children in Texas who read the books get to vote on which is the best.  The author who wins the voting is honored at the annual Texas Library Association Conference, and some of the children who voted are allowed to present the award.  During the coming year, the Bluebonnet Book Discussion Club will read and discuss books on the Bluebonnet list.

On Tuesdays, after school story time meets at 4:00 p.m. for children K – 2nd grade.  Blanca Scroggins will be reading stories and also teaching some bilingual skills, so this story time will be helpful to children learning English as well as for children learning Spanish.

Deanna Willman, the new children’s assistant at the Van Alstyne Library, entertained preschool children at the first story time in September with stories, songs, and crafts about lady-bugs.  Moms, add preschool story time to your weekly calendar.  Story time is every Wednesday morning at 10:15.

Children who attend four story times receive a free book.  Story time will help your child learn listening  skills that give them a head start when they enter Kindergarten, as well as involve them in pleasant reading activities.

Friends of the Van Alstyne Library will meet on Thursday September 10 at 7:00 in the Van Alstyne library.  All members are invited to attend this regular business meeting.  Become an active member of the Friends and help plan future events.  One of the events the group will be planning for Saturday, November 14 is an afternoon dessert with guest  C.J. Critt.  Ms. Critt is a well known reader of the Janet Evanovich tapes.  She will be reading selections from this very popular author.
