DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The University of North Texas Jazz Repertory Ensemble and UNT College of Music faculty and students will perform at the Crested Butte Music Festival held July 4-31. The ensemble will perform two concerts and open the 11th annual festival, which showcases the talents of several well-known musicians from around the nation and world.
The ensemble, directed by Dr. John Murphy, professor of music at UNT, will march in the July 4th parade and kick off the season with a free patriotic concert. On July 5, the ensemble will perform an evening of big-band swing tunes. Terri Sundberg, associate professor of music at UNT, will perform with the Festival Symphony Orchestra.
"This trip will give students a chance to practice the versatility they'll need as professional musicians by playing marches and other patriotic music along with jazz," Murphy said. "It's also a chance for the ensemble to perform on the road under challenging conditions, since the altitude of Crested Butte – nearly 8,900 feet – affects how the musicians feel and how wind instruments respond."
The following UNT College of Music students were selected by audition tape and recommendations to perform with the Festival Symphony Orchestra:
- Corina Alvarez, violin
- Emily Aquin, violin
- Yennifer Correia, violin
- Michael Galvin, violin
- Michael Gale, horn player
- Jason Hofmeister, horn players
- Juliette Buchanan, harpist
In addition to showcasing the talents of international musicians, the festival will feature up-and-coming performers through its Opera Young Artist Program in Paradise, Colo., a three-week opera school for vocal students. Conrad Bear, UNT College of Music master's student, was accepted as a young artist in the program.
This summer, the festival is "Discovering the Roots of Paradise," presenting a large variety of music from the nationalities of the first settlers in Crested Butte. Music from countries such as Austria, Croatia, Czechoslovakia, England, Hungary and Russia will be performed. The festival calendar features 33 performances in 28 days, including a wide array of symphony, chamber, opera, big-band, jazz, bluegrass, country and dance.
