SHERMAN, TX - United States Attorney Rebecca A. Gregory announced today that a 50-year-old Melissa man has been sentenced to 9 months in federal prison for child pornography violations in the Eastern District of Texas.

DERRELL BOATNER pleaded guilty to failing to register as a sex offender on February 12, 2008 and was sentenced today by United States Magistrate Judge Don D. Bush.

According to information presented in court, Boatner failed to register as a sex offender when he moved from Texas to Alabama.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood (PSC).  In February 2006, the Department of Justice created Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from online exploitation and abuse.  Lead by the United States Attorneys Offices, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as identify and rescue victims.

This case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michele A. Ratcliffe.
