The Tom Bean Lady Cats have made it to the third round of the softball playoffs for the second year in a row, but have naturally found it even more difficult. The Aubrey Lady Chaps are their opponents in the third round playoff series, and the first of those games was played last night in Whitesboro after the initially scheduled game for Wednesday night in Allen was called off due to bad weather.

There was not a cloud in the sky on this night, as the fans and players were greeted with a glorious spring evening. Unfortunately for the Lady Cats, their opponents enjoyed the weather the most. Aubrey came from a run down to win the first game 2-1.

The Lady Cats started out well, holding Aubrey scoreless until the fifth inning and getting a run themselves in the first. Lindsey Lacy’s only hit of the night resulted in her coming across home plate to give Tom Bean a 1-0 lead. Erin Tidwell was the only other Lady Cat to hit off of Lady Chaps pitcher Kylie Roos, who had 14 strikeouts on the night.

Tom Bean pitcher Megan Mitchell also did well, recording 10 strikeouts and making vital plays on the mound to keep Aubrey scoreless. At one point, the Lady Chaps had the bases loaded before Mitchell struck out two batters in a row to finish the inning.

Despite the senior pitcher’s efforts, the Aubrey offense was just too strong. The Lady Chaps tied the game up at 1-1 when Kelsey Reding hit in Kacee Henderson. Then in the top of the seventh, Henderson came in again for the eventual winning run off of a hit by Reding. Henderson went 3 for 4 on the night with 2 singles and a double, while Kelsey Reding went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.

The teams will meet for Game 2 tonight at 6:00 p.m. in Allen. Should the Lady Cats tie up the series at 1-1 with a win in Game 2 the teams will play Game 3 tonight to determine who moves on.
