Sometimes it is difficult to see when tension between neighbors is running high. But in one north Bonham neighborhood, the signs are only too easy to notice.
Family pets, in this instance cats, began disappearing on Franklin Avenue last week and the owners believe a neighbor is trapping the animals. As of Wednesday, May 7 three cats on the 1800 block of Franklin have vanished.
Bonham Police say that although the city has no ordinance specifically dealing with pets wandering out of their owner's yard, it should be understood that a property owner has the right to trap animals that become a nuisance.
Still, this has all been a particularly harsh eye-opener to the children that are beginning to realize the pets they loved won't be coming home.
While police say they haven't spoken to the individual most neighbors feel is trapping the cats, they have advised his family members that any animals trapped in the city limits must be turned over to the Bonham Animal Control Officer. If the pet's owner can be identified, the animal will be returned ONE TIME ONLY.
Following a recent visit by Bonham Police to the neighborhood, this cat suddenly showed up at its home covered in feces after being missing for a day.
Although all parties agree it is unfortunate that these pets have been subjected to such a terrifying experience, police say the property owner is completely within his or her rights to trap animals that have become a nuisance.
Although these pet owners are heartbroken at their loss, police advise residents to take whatever precautions are necessary to keep pets on their own property.
