Tarleton Stampede closes out spring rodeo season

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—The dust has settled, the ink has dried and the spring 2008 Southwest Region college rodeo season is in the books. The final rodeo for Tarleton State University’s men’s and women’s teams was the Tarleton Stampede, held April 24-26 at the Lone Star Arena in Stephenville.

The men brought home a second-place finish and the women placed fourth.

Individually for the men, Josh Hudson placed fourth in the first round of bareback riding with 76 points, second in the next round with 81 points and won the average. Hudson also won the first round in the saddle bronc with a 79-point ride and placed second in the average with 150 points.

Also placing in the saddle bronc for Tarleton was Jacob Crawley. He was third in the first round with 76 points, won the second with 80 points and won the average with 156 points.

Placing in the tie-down roping for Tarleton was D.J. Smith and Cimarron Thompson. Smith was fourth in the first go tying his calf in 9.7 seconds. Thompson was third in the second go and the average with 9.7 seconds and 19.9 total seconds.

Bode Scott was third in the first round of steer wrestling with a 4.2-second run.

In the team roping, Matt Robertson and header Cody Tew (Weatherford College) won the first round with a time of 6.4 seconds. Also placing in the first go for Tarleton was Kyle Heine and Cody Baker. Heine and Baker roped both ends in 8.1 seconds to place fourth.

For the women’s team, Sierra Thomas excelled in the barrel racing. She placed second in the first round with a run of 15.34 seconds, turned three in 15.32 seconds to win the second round and finished second in the average.

Four Tarleton Texans placed in the breakaway roping. Lindsey Ewing and Kayelen Helton split second and third in the first round with a time of 2.3 seconds. Peaches Mackenzie rounded out the top four in the first round with a time of 2.5 seconds. In the second round, Jamie Mader placed third with 3.2 seconds. Mader also finished fourth in the average with 6.0 seconds.

In the goat tying, Kasey Kramps won the first round with a run of 7.3 seconds. Cynda Norell placed third in the second go with 7.8 seconds. Bailee Switzer finished fourth in the second go and the average with times of 8.0 seconds and 16.3 seconds.

The next collegiate rodeo action for Tarleton will be the College National Finals Rodeo held June 15-21 in Casper, Wyo.

Final standings for Tarleton rodeo team members in the Southwest Region are as follows:

Men’s team – Third overall with 2,983.33 points
Women’s team – Second overall with 1,908.33 points
