COMMERCE, Texas - "Teaching 21st Century Literacies in 20th Century Classrooms" and "Help! There's a Millennial in My Classroom" are two of the topics to be discussed at a conference set Friday, May 9, at Texas A&M University-Commerce.
Two hundred North Texas middle and high school teachers, librarians, and curriculum specialists joined by university faculty, librarians, and graduate students will discuss the changing scene of education.
For this professional development day, A&M-Commerce faculty and area teachers will lead the workshops in the Sam Rayburn Memorial Student Center.
Following a welcome at 8:15 a.m., the video, "Shift Happens," will be presented. The video chronicles the rapid and ongoing world changes that are causing educators to rethink instruction in the classroom.
Sessions will be offered at 9 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. with the luncheon, sponsored by the A&M-Commerce Office of the Provost, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
The keynote address will be given by Dr. Leah Wickersham, A&M-Commerce associate professor of education; and Wendy Gruver, director of student assessment and advising/P-16 special adviser.
Wickersham and Gruver will discuss the millennial generation of students born between 1982 and 2002 and the challenges of teaching them.
