Binkley Hall at Sherman First United Methodist Church was transformed on Thursday, April 24 into another era. The Texoma Foster Grandparent Program celebrated its dedicated volunteers with a 1950s recognition. Some shared pictures from the 50s while others performed karaoke songs from the period.
Ed Burleson and Richard Burleson, local musicians, performed some Elvis, Fats Domino and Jerry Lewis songs. Set up and clean up was handled by the awesome advisory council led by Rita and Ron Kinney of Van Alstyne, president and vice president respectively. Burgers with all the fixin’s and tots were catered by Home Cooked Meals of Sherman with delicious desserts of banana pudding and peach cobbler.
Sheet cakes were donated by Betty Phelps of Sherman. Several area businesses donated door prizes, product and money to help make the event a success.
The Texoma Foster Grandparent Program is part of a national organization focused on utilizing area seniors (persons 60+years old) to mentor and tutor “at risk” children and youth of our community in public settings such as schools, day cares, and community centers. We currently have 40 volunteers serving approximately 40,000 hours per year in Texoma.
We are funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service to serve our local communities.
