Frenzee’s Modern Art Gallery will introduce the art of Belan Woo-Siy with a reception on Saturday, May 10 beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Art is often a fascinating glimpse through the window to the inner workings of its creator and this versatile artist will present approximately two dozen paintings along with six or seven coil-built pottery pieces for an exhibit titled Season after Season - Mute Interpretations: the art of Belan Woo-Siy.

Although much of Belan's body of work reveals an artist documenting current societal ills such as child abuse, alcoholism, the need to empower women and the dangers of ravaging our environment, as a youngster she recalls being captivated by the way comic-strip artist Chic Young could create his beautiful lead character, Blondie, with only a few simple strokes.

Years later, as a young mother working primarily with oil painting, the theme of mother and child appeared in many of Belan's early creations.  Now her passion is watercolors and coiled-built pottery, but the female face continues to resonate throughout most of her work.

"Let's lift up our women so they can nurture their children," says the artist.  "If we have good children, that eliminates so many problems.  The cradle of humanity is the mother."

If you notice something reminiscent of Pablo Picasso's style in Belan's watercolors, the Fannin County artist readily admits the Spanish painter was certainly an influence.

"I like the way he expressed himself," Belan explains.  "Nothing is absolutely original," she adds.  "Everything is an echo of an echo of an echo."

Belan sums up her work philosophically.

"If it hits home, if it connects, if we feel it together...that is all that matters."

Frenzee's is located at 410 North Center on the east side of the Bonham Square.  Join the artist for a wine and cheese reception beginning at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, May 10.
