Fannin County Grand Jury hears 78 cases
By the Office of Fannin County Attorney Richard Glaser

Fannin County Attorney Richard Glaser reports that from January 24, 2008 to February 21, 2008, the Fannin County Grand Jury met twice to hear seventy-eight (78) cases scheduled for their consideration and action.  Of the cases presented, seventy-five (75) were True Billed.

The three law enforcement agencies submitting the most cases were the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office with 43 cases, Bonham Police Department with 16 cases and Honey Grove Police Department with 10 cases.

Glaser expressed concern for a trend he sees across Fannin County.  While drug, theft, and burglary cases have been prevalent with 36 cases over the last two grand jury sessions, Glaser views an increase in violent crime as cause for concern.  This is because burglaries and thefts are often tied to drug offenses, as users attempt to sell or barter stolen property to obtain drugs.  As drug cases decrease, there is generally a corresponding decrease in burglaries and thefts.  On the other hand, violent crimes such as aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, and attempted murder reflect a deterioration of individual values that is often more difficult to reverse.  Nevertheless, law enforcement and the County Attorney’s Office are committed to successfully prosecuting these crimes and bringing their perpetrators to justice for the citizens of Fannin County.

An indictment is a formal charge and not in itself an indication of guilt or innocence.  The following people were indicted for the criminal offense and range of punishment indicated:
