Larry David (Trey) Wheeler III was extended a formal offer of appointment to the United States Naval Academy as a member of the Class of 2012. By accepting the offer, Trey took his first step on the journey to becoming an officer in the Navy or Marine Corps.
As the undergraduate college of the Navy and Marine Corps, the Naval Academy prepares outstanding young men and women to become leaders in the Naval Service and provide an experience unmatched by any other college or university. This program is highly competitive and will prepare its graduates morally, mentally, and physically for the privilege of leading Sailors and Marines.
Naval Academy graduates receive Bachelor of Science degrees and commissions as U.S. Navy ensigns or U.S. Marine Corps second lieutenants. They are obligated to serve at least five years in their chosen fields, selected from the many exciting opportunities available in naval aviation, surface warfare, submarines, Marine Corps and other naval service specialties.
Trey was in the enviable position to choose which service academy he wanted to attend. He was accepted by both the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy, receiving nominations from Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison for the Naval Academy and Representative Ralph M. Hall for both the Naval and Air Force academies. His visit to both schools last summer was a key element in selecting the Naval Academy as his first choice.
Trey Wheeler has attended Bonham schools since second grade and has worked very hard to earn this appointment; however, Trey understands that no great accomplishment can be achieved without help from many others.
Teachers from BISD, including Ms. Box, Ms. Spiller, Ms. Davis, Ms. Clark, and Ms. Farr, helped immensely by writing many letters of recommendation for Trey. They gave up part of their summer break to submit these letters and their support is greatly appreciated.
Also very appreciated was the selfless campaign John Burnett waged for Trey to garner support for Congressman Hall’s nomination.
Congressman Hall made mention of the local support during our visit in December by saying that he had, “received a letter or call from nearly everyone in Bonham regarding this young man.”
Letters of recommendation to Congressman Hall in support of Trey’s nomination from Sheriff Kenneth Moore, Bonham Area Chamber of Commerce, Bonham Rotary Club, Tom and Tommie Sue Turner, Kiwanis Club, Business and Professional Women, Mayor Roy Floyd, John Burnett, Mr. H.G. Dulaney, Butch Henderson, State Senator Bob Deuell, State Representative Larry Phillips and County and District Attorney Richard Glaser are very much appreciated. Also appreciated are the numerous phone calls placed directly to Congressman Hall from others in the community.
