Texas Department of State Health Services COVID-19 report

Austin, Texas -- Daily new cases of COVID-19 dropped to 8,706 in Wednesday's data release by Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and Texas had 235 newly reported fatalities related to the novel coronavirus.

To date, the state has reported 459,887 confirmed cases, with an estimated 315,652 recoveries and 7,497 deaths due to COVID-19.

The positivity rate continued to climb for the fourth-consecutive day. As of Tuesday, August 4, the seven-day positivity rate was 15.58%.

Hospitalization numbers are steadily declining. Texas hospitals currently have 8,455 lab-confirmed COVID-19 patients, down from 8,674 in Tuesday's report and the lowest number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients since July 6.

The state now has an estimated 136,738 active cases, a reduction of 920 active cases during the past 24 hours.

The Harris County healthcare system continues to absorb large numbers of new cases. The county reported 1,438 newly confirmed cases on Wednesday.

Tarrant County was the hotspot in North Texas with 805 new cases during the past 24 hours. Dallas County had 641 new cases.

Collin County reported a single-day record of 317 new cases in Wednesday's data release, while Denton County turned in 95 newly confirmed cases.

Hunt County was notified of 46 new cases, Grayson County reported 41 newly confirmed cases, Fannin County was advised of 18 new cases, Cooke County had four new cases and Lamar County had two cases.
